Sustainable Living

One of the first actions of the Jeffery Place New Community Authority was to adopt an Environmental Charter. It lists in detail the founding principles of Jeffrey Place. This innovative commitment is leading to the build of the greenest community in Columbus. And it is the outline into which the Jeffrey Place neighborhood will grow. It is our commitment to the residents, community and partners at Jeffrey Place to exercise sustainable practices at every possible turn. We know it’s a little different to have our own environmental charter- but at Jeffrey Place we don’t just talk the talk. We walk the very green walk.

Here are just some of our favorite sustainable elements at Jeffrey Place

Green Roofs:
Sometimes living green means literally adding more green to your life—in a word: PLANTS. A green rooftop, also called a living rooftop, is when some type of vegetation is installed on a flat or sloped roof. Why drench your rooftop in tar and shingles? It’s valuable space that can be planted.

Planted rooftops cool your home in the summer, by absorbing heat and keep it insulated in winter. As little as 10 square feet of planted rooftop can remove as much as five pounds of toxic particulate matter from the environment every three months. They also mitigate urban heat island effect, provide much needed green space for urban dwellers, and re-establishes green habitats for birds and butterflies.

So, we planted nearly every rooftop in the community. Really, it was a no brainer.

Green Technology:
Solar Photovoltaic Panels, Geo Thermal Heating and Cooling and modular construction are no longer words ripped from science fiction. These sources of renewable energy are easy on the environment and easy on your wallet, and available for you today at Jeffrey Place. These green technologies are standard at the NB1 homes and you can read all about them!

Rainwater Reuse:
When you commit to green living practices you soon realize everything can be recycled, reused, or repurposed. Even rain. Rainwater harvesting is the process of intercepting storm-water runoff and putting it to beneficial use. Rainwater retention is a high return green living technology. It mitigates urban rainwater runoff and eases the burden on over-strained urban rainwater retention drains and sewer systems.

A retention tank stored underground at NB1 will capture rainwater run-off and recycle it for irrigation. This avoids costly sanitizing and filtering through the city system and reduces buyback costs for owner uses that do not require filtered water. Go rain!

Alternate Means of Transportation:
Walkability and bikeability were high on our list of must-haves when designing the master plan for Jeffrey Place. It’s a hallmark of environmental and social sustainability.
Shorter more walkable blocks, a tie-in to city bike paths, mixed-use development of both residential and retail, and more than four and a half acres of public parks and green space were born of this desire. With shuttles, rental bike systems and flex car systems in the works for the Jeffrey Place community two/three/four-car families can easily transform into a greener, one-car household. Spend more time doing the things you love, and less time driving there.
