Italian Village
Jeffrey Place is proud to be part of Italian Village and to be a major contributor to the continued rebirth of this historic neighborhood. The entire district is bounded by North High Street on the west, Fifth Avenue on the north, the Conrail railroad tracks to the east and Interstate Route 670 on the south. Jeffrey Place is nestled in the southeastern edge of the district and accounts for almost one-quarter of the neighborhoods total acreage.
The Italian Village area was one of Columbus' first suburbs, annexed to the city of Columbus in 1862. In 1972, residents of Italian Village formed the Italian Village Society to mobilize against the deteriorating physical condition of the area and the threat of having an increasing number of historic buildings demolished. Residents and property owners have continued to work tirelessly to nurture a sense of community and a vision of an improved neighborhood.
In 1973, the Italian Village Commission was established by Columbus City Council as part of a network of neighborhood commissions that oversee development issues in the neighborhoods. The combined efforts of active citizens in Italian Village and the support from the city have created one of the most vibrant and convenient places to live in all of Columbus. Their efforts have also assured steadily increasing property values in the neighborhood for now and for years to come.
In 1986, the entire Short North Area, which is made up of Italian Village, Victorian Village, and the High Street Commercial District, was awarded an "All American City" designation for its public-private partnership in revitalization of the area. Several sections of Italian Village were recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
